Dome mine team triumphs in first-aid competition

The first-aid team from the Dome gold mine of Placer Dome in Timmins, Ont., has won the annual McCrea First-Aid Competition sponsored by the Mines Accident Prevention Association of Ontario (MAPAO).

The 4-person Dome team was one of 12 teams competing in five locations across northern Ontario. Each team was presented with an identical simulated emergency situation, which this year involved an overturned front-end loader in a mill yard.

Team members’ actions in dealing with potential problems and treating the victims were then graded by two MAPAO judges. The Dome team had the highest overall score.

Placing second was the team from the Kidd Creek metallurgical site of Falconbridge, while third place went to the team from the Golden Patricia mine of Lac Minerals.

The Dome team is eligible to enter the annual St. John Ambulance Provincial Open First-Aid Competition in Toronto in October.

The McCrea trophy was donated in 1929 by then provincial minister of mines Charles McCrea in order to stimulate interest in first aid in the Ontario mining industry. The 1992 winner was the team from the Golden Giant mine of Hemlo Gold Mines.
