After 52 years and 13,388 issues, the George Cross Newsletter and its editor, George Cross, Jr., have decided to call it a day.
The final issue of the west-coast mining chronicle was published at the end of 2000. The first issue appeared in April 1947, as a 2-page daily edited by George Cross, Sr. In 1963, Cross Jr. took over and has been running it ever since.
At the 18th Annual Cordilleran Exploration Roundup, held in January in Vancouver, Cross was given the Frank Woodside Past President’s Award, in recognition of his lengthy service with the newsletter.
“I don’t think it will be difficult to adjust to a two-day weekend, but the adjustment to a seven-day weekend might take a little longer,” he said in the final issue of the Newsletter.
On Feb. 28, a dinner to honour Cross will be held at the ball room level of the Hotel Vancouver. Tickets are $125 each, with part of the proceeds donated, on Cross’s behalf, to the British Columbia and Yukon Chamber of Mines’ Gold Key Club.
