Diavik helps skills program

Diavik Diamond Mines has donated $10,000 to the Northwest Territories and Nunavut chapter of Skills Canada in an effort to help fund programs providing courses in trades and technology.

Skills Canada raises awareness about career opportunities and conducts programs that involve northerners in skills-related activities.

“There is a tremendous need in the north, as well as nationally, for trades and technology skills,” says Allyson Stroeder, executive director of the N.W.T./Nunavut branch.

Each year the branch holds a skills competition. Northern winners move on to the national Skills Canada competition and a world skills competition.

“For young people looking to get a taste of trades and technology, the opportunities are limited,” says Diavik Training Manager Glenn Zelinski. “Skills Canada gives youth a chance to test the waters.”
