Diavik awarded for efficiency

The Canadian governmnet has given an award to the Diavik diamond mine in the Northwest Territories for its efficient use of energy.

The energy savings resulted chiefly from a computerized employee training program, which saved the mine’s operator, Rio Tinto, more than 1 million litres of fuel oil.

Natural Resources Minister Herb Dhaliwal recently toured the Diavik site and presented employees with a plaque marking the accomplishment.

According to the annual report of the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC), the country’s mining, manufacturing and construction companies saved almost $3 billion in energy costs in 2001. As well, Canadian industry reduced greenhouse gas emissions from energy use to below 1990 levels.

CIPEC is a partnership between government and industry consisting of 45 trade associations that represent more than 5,000 companies and about 95% of secondary industrial energy demand in Canada.
