A group of heirs of the original owners of the minerals rights for part of the Klipspringer diamond project in South Africa has begun a legal battle with SouthernEra Resources (SUF-T) and Randgold over those rights.
Those heirs have brought an application against the minister of mineral and energy affairs, the Master of the Supreme Court of South Africa, Randgold and SouthernEra to prohibit the minister from issuing a certificate authorizing the transfer of the Marsfontein farm’s mineral rights to Randgold, SouthernEra’s joint-venture partner.
One of the most important deposits at Klipspringer, the M1 kimberlite pipe, is situated on Marsfontein. Its average stone size is 0.31 carat per stone, and 685,000 tonnes is inferred to a depth of 100 metres. The pipe is known to continue beyond 100 metres. Previous valuation on the M1 stones averaged US$142.58 per carat.
SouthernEra and Randgold have complied with all South African mineral legislation and are confident that the mineral rights certificate for Marsfontein will be issued, SouthernEra states in a release.
