Caledonia Mining (CAL-T) has signed a deal with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to acquire a 13,740 sq.-km concession area near the town of Kananga, in Kasai province.
Caledonia is not required to make any expenditures on the property.
Geological programs on the concession conducted before 1970 revealed minerals containing diamonds, gold, copper, nickel, cobalt and chromium. In addition, a number of nearby alluvial diamond deposits are currently being worked by local operators.
A study of previously collected geological data is under way, and the initial reconnaissance sampling of target areas is scheduled to begin in January.
