Vancouver-based Poplar Resources (PPX-V) has signed an agreement with two prospectors who are reported to have made the first-ever diamond discovery in Sweden.
The diamonds were found in a till boulder in the northern part of the country. The stones were identified with the assistance of the Swedish Geological Survey and the Camborne School of Mines. The host rock is believed to be a lamproite, based on the results of independent petrological analysis carried out by a consultant.
Poplar and its joint-venture partner, Alcaston Mining of Australia, have an application pending for a 270,000-sq.-km property in northern Sweden. Poplar also has mining licences in adjoining Finland.
Poplar’s geologists have inspected the site where the Swedish prospectors made their discovery. The prospectors were paid a small fee and will earn a 1% royalty in any future diamond operation resulting from their find. They have also been hired by the company to assist with ongoing exploration.
