Sources close to the Lac de Gras diamond play say the kimberlite that yielded 10 microdiamonds and one macrodiamond in a 40-kg sample for the Dia Met-BHP joint venture (T.N.M., Sept. 21/92) outcrops on surface and was identified by the Geological Survey of Canada earlier this year. They say the bulk sample was probably taken from the surface, not by drilling. Company officials would not confirm or deny the rumors. . . . Some observers expect a follow-up release from Dia Met to confirm additional diamond discoveries on the company’s joint venture ground. . . . The Wall Street Journal has reportedly made a trip up to the Territories to research the Lac de Gras diamond story.
