Denison workers ready to strike

Unionized employees at Denison Mines’ (TSE) Elliot Lake, Ont., uranium operations say they are prepared to strike in support of contract demands.

Denison’s 400 uranium miners, who are represented by the United Steelworkers of America Local 5742, voted Sept. 22 to give their bargaining unit the right to call a strike.

As the Elliot Lake mine is scheduled to close in May, 1992, pensions have been a key issue in contract talks which broke down recently. The union wants pensions indexed to inflation but the company considers the demands to be excessive. The previous contract between workers and the company expired Sept. 1.
