The chairman of Sherritt will talk about his company’s activities at the April 20 luncheon of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
Ian Delaney has been running Sherritt, now based in Alberta, since 1990. The company has four primary businesses, including a 50-50 nickel-cobalt venture with General Nickel S.A. of Cuba. In his presentation, Delaney intends to focus on recent developments in that Caribbean country. Sherritt Fertilizers is Canada’s largest and lowest-cost producer of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer. A wholly owned subsidiary, Canada Northwest Energy, is an oil and gas producer active in Canada and overseas. And Sherritt Technologies is involved in advanced industrial materials research and development.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Delaney worked in the investment community. From 1980 to 1984, he was vice-president of McLeod, Young Weir (a predecessor company of Scotia McLeod), and from 1984 to 1987 served as president of Merrill Lynch Canada. He was president of Horsham Corp. for three years before joining Sherritt.
