Marq de Villiers, whose book Water won the 1999 Governor General’s Award for non-fiction, will speak at the joint annual meeting of the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) and the Mineralogical Association of Canada (MAC). The event is slated for May 27-30 at Memorial University in St. John’s, Nfld.
De Villiers’ talk, scheduled for May 27, is titled Water in Crisis: Hype or Reality?
About 1,000 delegates are expected to attend the meeting, which will include various field trips.
The GAC is made up of geoscientists, including earth scientists, whereas the MAC is focused on advancing the knowledge of mineralogy, crystallography, petrology, geochemistry and the like.

Pyrometallurgy ’02: call for papers
A call for papers has been sent out for Pyrometallurgy 2002, the first international symposium on pyrometallurgy, slated for March 11-12, 2002, in Cape Town, South Africa.
Outlines should not exceed 150 words and must be submitted by the end of September.
The symposium will be running simultaneously with BioHydroMet 2002, a conference on bio- and hydro-metallurgy.
Both conferences are being organized by Minerals Engineering International and will be held in the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town.

Arctic meeting tackles environment
Environmental concerns related to the opening and closing of mines will be emphasized at the Sixth Symposium on Mining in the Arctic, May 28-31 in Nuuk, Greenland.
Featured will be an evening workshop will focus on strategies for controlling acid mine drainage.
The symposium will bring together scientists and representatives of government and industry from around the world.
The organizer is the International Arctic Mining Advisory Council (IAMAC), which was formed in 1986.
The last symposium was held in 1998 in Yellowknife, N.W.T.
