De Beers nabs diamond thieves

An ongoing investigation east of Pretoria, South Africa, has led to 20 arrests and the recovery of 590 stolen diamonds. Nineteen more people are being held for questioning.

De Beers has been working with police and government departments to penetrate syndicates in the illicit diamond trade near its Premier mine, 30 km east of Pretoria.

The value of the diamonds recovered is still unknown.

De Beers has six diamond mining operations in South Africa and more in neighbouring Botswana.

In late July, De Beers issued its results for the six months to June, showing a 2.8% rise in sales to US$2.9 billion from US$2.8 billion a year earlier.

Most of De Beers is held by global mining giant Anglo American.
