Drills are turning on the Meliadine River project on the west coast of Hudson Bay, about 12 miles northeast of Rankin Inlet, N.W.T.
Between 12 and 15 widely spaced reconnaissance holes are being drilled on five separate targets in the WesMeg area. Joint owners Cumberland Resources (VSE) and Comaplex Resources (TSE) have budgeted the program at about $510,000.
Glen Dickson, who is heading up the program for Cumberland, said each target covers a 1×1.5-km area.
WesMeg features a thick, stratigraphic sequence of intensely folded, overburden-covered iron oxide formation. More than 1,000 mineralized boulders occur proximal and down-ice from both the WesMeg and nearby Musket Bay areas. Previously, grab-sampling from the boulders returned encouraging values, with 80% of the samples assaying better than one gram gold per tonne, 5% grading better than 6.8 grams, 12% better than 34.2 grams and 3% greater than 68.5 grams.
Drilling on the WesMeg trend last year returned three holes grading more than 10 grams gold over core lengths of three metres and 13 holes grading better than one gram gold over varying core lengths.
