CROSS-CUTS

B.C. CLAIM-STAKING ON THE RISE

In spite of a general lull in mine exploration across the country, claim-staking has not abated in British Columbia. According to Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, the provincial ministry responsible for data collection, more than 12,900 claims were staked in 1990, a 1.5% increase over the previous year.

As readers of this magazine might have guessed, the focus of attention was the Golden Triangle area in the northwestern part of the province and the Northern Quesnel Trough, north of Prince George.

MINING HALL OF FAME INVITES NOMINATIONS

Calls are again going out for nominations for admission to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. A select number of candidates will be inducted at the fourth annual banquet, to be held in Toronto on Jan. 6, 1992.

Nominations will again be administered through the Mining Association of Canada in Ottawa, one of four official sponsors. Others are the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada and Southam Mining Group.

Each sponsor is entitled to five nominations, while each of its 15 countrywide mining-oriented associates is entitled to one.

Closing date for nominations is Sept. 15. Contact Frances Thornton by phoning (416) 445-6641.

NEW CHAIR

Laval University’s Department of Mining and Metallurgy has created an industrial chair on narrow-vein and small-scale mining. The chair is jointly funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and Cambior.

Research will focus on developing mining equipment for narrow-vein or small-scale mines. Dr. Jacek Paraszczak, who holds the chair, will lead a team of researchers whose efforts have been funded by a C$1-million grant from nserc, Cambior and Laval.
