Cross-Cuts WHERE’S THE FIRE?

Designers in Moscow say they have developed a device that can locate and extinguish pit fires in coal mines in a matter of minutes. The device fills the pit with liquid helium, which chokes out the fire. And because the temperature of liquid helium is nearly zero, the hot coal seam is also cooled for firemen to enter the pit and put out the remaining seats of fire. The entire operation, which requires the use of two trucks (one carrying the helium tanks and the other the pump), can take as little as 10 to 15 minutes.

According to a press release, the experimental fire extinguisher has been successfully tested.
