This improved financial performance was led by Cyprus Copper which earned $94.3 million in the second quarter, nearly three times second-quarter 1988 earnings of $34 million.
Cyprus Specialty Minerals earned $6.1 million in the quarter, compared with $4.3 million in the second quarter of 1988. The company said these results reflect strong demand and higher sales and realizations from both Chilean and U.S. lithium operations.
Cyprus Industrial Minerals returned to profitability with earnings of $1.4 million, but Cyprus Coal lost $3 million in the second quarter and Cyprus Gold lost $5.5 million.
