Conferences offer grab bag of mining topics

Mining in the 21st century will be the focus of a conference in Arequipa, Peru, from Sept. 6 to 10.

Entitled “Mining: Challenges of the Third Millennium” and sponsored by the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru, the meeting will include technical papers, keynote speakers and discussion forums, as well as a trade show. Technical papers will cover such topics as mineral processing, safety, automation, environmental protection, exploration and technological advances.

Closer to home, the Calgary Mineral Exploration Group will host the Calgary Mining Forum, to be held April 21 and 22 at the city’s Convention Centre.

Entitled “New Horizons in Mining,” the conference will focus on diamond exploration in Alberta, with emphasis on activity in the Buffalo Head Hills and Birch Mountains regions. In South America, the Brazilian Mining Congress will be held from Aug. 17 to 20 at the Minascentro Convention Centre in the city of Belo Horizonte.

Sponsored by the Brazilian Mining Institute, the conference will feature technical sessions, including: Brazil’s mineral legislation; sustainable development and the environment; new projects; safety and health; and mine automation. A trade show is also scheduled.
