Conferences celebrate 250 years of nickel

A 5-day conference in Duesseldorf, Germany, will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the discovery of nickel.

The event, scheduled for May 6-11, 2001, is designed to celebrate the anniversary of Axel Frederik Cronstedt’s successful extraction of nickel from niccolite ore and his characterization of the metal in 1751.

Speakers have been invited to give talks on various topics, including: nickel mining, smelting and refining; nickel deposits and reserves; technological developments such as pressure-acid-leaching and the treatment of ferronickel; various product forms; various end uses of nickel; and the recycling of nickel.

The conference will be presented in German and English, with simultaneous translation provided.

Later in the year, from Aug. 26 to 29, the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) will likewise celebrate nickel’s 250th birthday at the Second International Symposium on Nickel and Cobalt, to be held in Toronto.

The symposium will be held concurrently with the 31st Annual Hydrometallurgical Meeting.

The theme of the overall meeting and trade show will be: productivity through technological innovation.

The history of nickel will be addressed at the annual luncheon of the Historical Metallurgy Committee.
