Canada Forum and the Canadian Aboriginal Minerals Association will co-host the fourth annual conference on the relationship between mining companies and aboriginal communities.
Entitled “Tapping Traditional Resources,” the conference is scheduled for Nov. 19-20 at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay, Ont. It will focus on building and maintaining a mutually beneficial agreement between mining companies and aboriginal communities on mineral-rich land. The event is being sponsored by Placer Dome and Inco.
Speakers will include: Frank Calder, elder of the Nisga’s Nation in British Columbia; Stewart Gendron, president of Voisey’s Bay Nickel Co.; William Barbour, president of the Labrador Inuit Association; and Peter Penashue, leader of the Innu Nation.
The event will also feature international speakers, including: Raymond Morrison, chairman of Australia’s Top End Aboriginal Coalition; Voyce Durling-Jones, Liberia’s consul-general; and Utula Samana, Papua New Guinea’s ambassador to the United Nations.
Workshops will enable delegates to learn about partnerships and co-operative arrangements between companies and communities.
