Attendees at an upcoming conference in Sudbury, Ont., will be shown how Indian groups and mining companies can share the riches of the earth through co-operation.
The conference, entitled “Exploring Common Ground: Aboriginal Communities and Base Metal Mining,” will be held Nov. 14-15 at Sudbury’s Four Points Sheraton Hotel.
Speakers will include key aboriginal leaders involved in the Voisey Bay staking rush, such as Labrador Inuit Association President William Barbour and Innu Nation President Peter Penashue. Also on hand will be Inco Chairman Michael Sopko, Newfoundland Premier Clyde Wells, and Douglas Horswill of Diamond Fields Resources.
Overseeing the conference will be two chairmen: Waskaganish band chief Billy Diamond and Price Waterhouse deputy managing partner Douglas Hayhurst.
“The conference is a forum for open and honest dialogue between aboriginal leaders, mining executives and governments on their respective visions for co-operation,” says Hans Matthews, president of the Canadian Aboriginal Minerals Association.
“It will also address the practical concerns and issues involved in creating profitable working relationships.”
