Conference good for BC

On May 11, the Mining Association of British Columbia and the province’s Ministry of Energy and Mines co-hosted a unique conference that focused on mining in British Columbia.

I would like to thank the many people who took the time to share their expertise and ideas at this symposium.

Together, industry executives, senior government officials, environmentalists, educators and economists explored issues ranging from high-tech innovations in modern mining to the needs of junior mining companies and how best to ensure a viable future for this important industry.

Discussions were frank and lively, and many participants have told me they found them extremely valuable.

I share this perspective, and again thank and congratulate everybody who celebrated Mining Week by contributing to the success of the symposium “Mining in B.C. — A Foundation for the New Century.”

Along with Energy and Mines Minister Dan Miller and government staff, I look forward to further discussion of the topics raised at the conference. We want to build on the foundation that was established at this conference and ensure that mining contributes to B.C’s social and economic development well into the new millennium.

J.D. Ebbels

Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines

Victoria, B.C.
