Acker Drill of Scranton, Pa , is a U S manufacturer, competing in the Canadian market It markets three models of underground diamond drills, according to Stan Gordon of Acker The company’s Little John drill, which can drill holes at any angle, is designed in modular form The power pack can be placed up to 15 m away from the control panel Power pack options include electric, air and air rotary with hydraulic feed
Two small, skid-mounted units in the company’s Mountaineer line of drills are also small enough to be used underground The standard unit features a Ford, water-cooled D-172 gasoline engine rated at 37 kw
The wire line hoist may be an integral part of the machine or it can be self-powered Drum capacity is 1,066 m of wireline Useful for speeding up wire line coring applications, the hoist is hydraulic powered with full controls Connors
The Connors 20 BH and 20 HH diamond drills are manufactured by Connors Drilling of Kamloops, B C , and distributed by G W Drilling Supplies of Langley, B C , Diaset Products of Richmond, B C and Haileybury, Ont There are 17 units operating in Canada
To keep the drill rod and feed frame in a direct line and to avoid the lever ed and twisting effect inherent in off- set chuck and feed frame designs, the chuck centre of the Connors drill is mounted in line with the feed frame All components are mounted on one skid, thus reducing the time, labor and expense involved in moving from drill station to drill station
The drill can be track- or skid- mounted and can be built in two basic sizes: 1 m wide by 2 2 m long, or 2 m long and 1 5 m wide The 20 bh weighs 1 9 tonnes while the 20 hh is 2 3 tonnes
Both drills are fitted with hydraulic rod clamps Options include hydraulic chuck, water pump and size of wireline hoist All components are compatible with fire-resistant fluids Diamant Boart Craelius
In May, 1988, Diamant Boart purchased Craelius ab of Sweden from the Soseco Group of Industries, based in England The acquisition created a new company which manufactures drills in both Belgium and Sweden As a result of the merger, Diamant Boart Craelius now markets the widest range of underground diamond drill rigs on the market, according to the company
Five models cover the maximum depth ranges from 145 m to 1,350 m In Canada, the company’s offices are in North Bay, Ont
The latest addition to the company’s popular Diamec series of drills is the DIAMEC 230, according to General Manager Eric Wickman A very compact drill, designed for use in tight locations, the 230 can drill relatively short holes from 145 m to 300 m long, depending on the size of drill rods used Constructed of numerous aluminum parts, the 230 weighs just 605 kg Features include synchronized rod-handling and all-hydraulic control
A new operator’s panel, featuring an r p m regulator for the hydraulic motor and a chuck pressure regulator with pressure gauge, has been added to the older DIAMEC 262 and DIAMEC 252 models Other features of the Diamec units include: a one-piece jaw and jaw-holder, a rubber sleeve with hard wear rings from lower-cost wear parts and increased chuck life, and a wide range of r p m
Besides the standard frame, the DIAMEC 262 is available on a wheel- mounted frame, carriage-mounted frame and on a frame mounted on a self-moving band wagon JKS Boyles
Canada’s largest, home-grown, diamond drill manufacturer is Toronto- based jks Boyles
The B-10 hydrostatic drill from jks is the latest addition to the company’s range of long-stroke hydraulic drills with rod-handling capability
Some of the most common problems associated with this type of drill have been overcome by using a new type of chuck which eliminates the need for a rotating pressure seal while drilling The chuck closes mechanically and opens hydraulically The foot clamp, too, is mechanically closed and hydraulically opened In the event of a power failure at a drill station, hydraulic pressure can be lost But both the chuck and the rod clamp on the B-10 can hold the rod load without hydraulic pressure Both can also be controlled manually
Other features of the B-10 include a torque control on the control console which allows the driller to lower both the rotation pressure and the speed of the drill while maintaining constant horsepower as a hole becomes deeper The adjustment can be made without stopping the machine and making a manual adjustment to the motor
The leaf-type feed chain of the B-10 weighs about 20 kg, about twice the weight of a roller-type chain, but is 200% stronger
“B-10 drills already in operation have given exceptional results with virtually no downtime,” according to Guenter Odlozinski, director of engineering for JKS
The B-15 and B-20 are more powerful versions of the B-10 Longyear
With five underground diamond drills on the market, covering drilling depths up to 1,800 m, Longyear appears to have the widest range of drills available to the Canadian market
The Cadillac of the company’s drills is the Hydro 44 The unit has 47 kw of power available to hoist and lower heavy drill strings quickly with complete control Hydrostatic design allows the unit to drill to considerable depths Since there is no slippage between the brake and the drum surfaces when rods are lowered, there is no buildup of heat to limit lowering and hoisting capacity The hydrostatic oil system of the Hydro 44 absorbs all heat generated by lowering the rods The brake is used only to hold loads for extended periods
With stepless, fingertip control of chuck speeds, drillers can maintain constant chuck speeds in difficult ground when loads can suddenly drop The Hydro 44 is designed so that there is no surge in chuck speed Equipped with a standard bevel gear set, the unit can be smoothly rotated down to 20 r p m And with an optional slow- speed bevel gear set, smooth rotation down to 10 to 15 r p m is possible
To reduce rod-tripping times, hoist speed in both rotation directions is infinitely adjustable Resistivity Mapping
A new application of the UTEM3 electromagnetic system, offered by Lamontagne Geophysics, permits the measurement of bedrock resistivities in a wider range of environments than conventional methods This “Inductive Source Resistivity” (ISR) technique does not require grounded transmitter electrodes and, therefore, does not suffer from the normal contact problems associated with dc resisttivity methods
Using the UTEM transmitter as source, currents are induced in the bedrock by electromagnetic induction rather than direct electrical contact as with conventional methods The transmitter, because of the unique characteristics of the UTEM waveform, induces currents analogous to those of conventional methods In one survey, bedrock contacts below more than 300 ft of resistive till were accurately located and verified, the company says Electricity Monitor
Reduced electrical utility charges are one of the benefits of a new microprocessor-based device which monitors electricity demand The unit was developed by Micro-Watt Control Devices of Calgary, Alta
Based on instantaneous demand information, the peak advance warni
ng system uses a proprietary algorithm to predict and annunciate when a new demand peak will be recorded by the utility company The annunciation typically provides five to 15 minutes advance warning so that electrical demand can be electively or automatically reduced
The unit pays for itself in about one year, Micro-Watt says
Features include demand setpoint, windowing, update rates, relay output action, security access and an alarm Mine Power Cable
A new power-feeder cable with lead- cured neoprene jacket has been developed by Cablec Corp of Marion, Ind
Called the ep Type mp-gc, the cable is designed for high-voltage (2-25 kv) distribution in harsh environments The cable is highly resistant to tearing, punctures, abrasion, oil and flame, the company says Circle Reply Card No Pillow Blocks
A new series of pillow blocks, constructed of ductile iron and with two inlet holes in the cap for lubrication, has been introduced by skf Canada
The new housings, which are supplied with four holes drilled, tapped and plugged, can be used with the new taconite service seal or the standard ler triple seal rings, the company says
The taconite seal does not necessitate any modification to the block, as purging is accomplished through the seal itself Mobile Diamond Drill
Working in co-operation with Dominik Drilling, JKS Boyles has developed a skid-mounted unitized version of its B-30H all-hydraulic diamond drill
A unique feature of the rig is its hydraulically-powered folding mast which conforms to bridge clearances, allowing road transport from one drill site to the next
Dominik is operating a B-30H on a property in Matagami, Que Another unit has been delivered to the Maritimes and a third will be in operation shortly in western Canada, the company says
The B-30H has a single line depth rating of 6,750 ft (bq size) and has a hoisting capacity of 30,000 lb Stroke length is 11 ft and retraction time is six seconds Underground Jon
Odor-free toilet facilities, designed specifically for underground mines, are available from Fitzpatrick Industries of Sault Ste Marie, Ont
The company’s Lil’Jon unit is a self- contained portable unit which does not require any sewer, water or power supply connections Operating on a recirculation principle, it uses a chemical, pump and filter to process and reuse the flushing fluids The unit is designed to accommodate about 1,000 usages before requiring pump out and cleaning
The powdered additive is added directly to the holding tank via the toilet bowl Hydraulic Cylinders
A new series of high-pressure, heavy-duty, hydraulic cylinders has been introduced by Parker Hannifin Corp of Des Plaines, Ill
Bore sizes range from 1 1/2 to 12 inches and pressure ratings range up to 3,000 lb per sq inch Features include a rugged tie rod design and interchangable mountings Converting to CAD
Cadscan of Burnaby, B C , will convert manually-created mine plan drawings into digital images using a high-resolution scanner, at about half the cost of manual input or digitizing
First the drawing is scanned, converting it to a raster file Then, using artificial intelligence, various elements of the drawing are recognized and converted to a vector file Finishing touches are then added manually to provide a cad drawing which can be revised using most cad software
Turn-around time is extremely quick, according to the company
