Work by Cominco Ltd. on a wollastonite property near Tweed, Ont., has identified a zone striking for 1,000 m. Partner Platinova Resources says that the zone could host several million tons of the industrial mineral.
Wollastonite is used as a filler in plastics and in glaze and ceramic bodies. Depending on its physical characteristics and grades, the product ranges in price from $150-$600 per ton, Platinova says.
Work completed by Cominco includes mapping, trenching, drilling and flotation tests on samples of minerals. Grades range from 35%-54% and zone widths are up to 32 m. Platinova says funding is being arranged for the next phase of exploration which will be completed in March, 1988. The partners are also considering a pilot plant scale test.
