An employee of Cominco was among three Canadians held hostage, but subsequently released, by Peruvian rebels at the Japanese ambassador’s residence in Lima in late December.
Kieran Metcalfe, 43, manger of the Cajamarquilla refinery in the outskirts of the Peruvian capital, was released unharmed along with several other hostages. At presstime, 140 hostages were still being held.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Bolivia, three people died and 13 more were injured during an incident at the Amayapampa and Capa Circa gold mines operated by Vista Gold. The conflict resulted from the occupation of the properties by a group of dissident miners.
On Dec. 23, members of the miners’ group and government representatives signed an agreement for the peaceful return of the mines to Vista Gold. The government also sent in police to restore law and order to the area.
