Cominco approves smelter expansion

Vancouver-based Cominco (CLT-T) has approved a US$300-million expansion program at its Cajamarquilla zinc refinery near Lima, Peru.

The expansion, expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2000, will increase capacity at the refinery to 240,000 from 120,000 tonnes per year.

Additional feed for the larger plant will come from increased purchases of Peruvian zinc concentrates.

Government approval of the expansion is expected soon. Cominco holds an 82% interest in the plant, with Japanese firm Marubeni holding the remainder.
