CIM presents annual awards

Peter Tarassoff, outgoing president of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), presented awards to a number of well-known resource industry professionals during the association’s 93rd annual meeting held here recently.

Arthur Soregaroli, Teck Corp.’s new chief geoscientist, won the Distinguished Service Medal, the CIM’s highest award. It was given in honor of his commitment to the CIM and to earth science education, and his many contributions to the Canadian mining industry.

Noranda’s Alfred Powis received the Inco Medal, which has been awarded annually since 1933. He was honored for his significant contribution in making Noranda one of the largest natural resource companies in Canada and for his hard work on behalf of the mining industry.

James Gill, president and founder of Aur Resources, was awarded the Past Presidents’ Memorial Medal “in recognition of his skill, dedication, practicability and exceptional business sense.” Gill is best known for his role in the Louvicourt copper-zinc-gold discovery near Val d’Or, Que.

Robert Cathro, president of Cathro Exploration, was presented the A.O. Dufresne Award for his “outstanding contribution” to mineral exploration in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory and for his “commitment to the north.”

Henry Imorde won the Selwyn G. Blaylock Medal for exceptional achievement in the field of mining, metallurgy or geology. He is credited with many accomplishments, including having played an important role in Saskatchewan’s potash mining industry.

The CIM Coal Award was presented to Walter Riva, chairman of B.C. Coal, in recognition of his long and distinguished career in Western Canada’s coal mining industry.

Alastair Sinclair, head of the University of British Columbia’s geological sciences department, received the Robert Elver Mineral Economic Award. Among other winners were Reini Ehrlich (McParland Memorial Medal), Elsie Graham (Order of Sancta Barbara), Craig Leitch (Barlow Memorial Medal) and Jerry McCrank (J.C. Sproule Memorial Plaque).
