The Newfoundland branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) will hold its 38th annual meeting on Nov. 7-9 in St. John’s. It will begin with a day-long Open House by the Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy. Theme of the meeting is “The Changing Role of Mineral and Petroleum Resources in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Industrial minerals, including limestone, marble, and dimension stone, will also take an unusually prominent role in the sessions, says Norm Mercer, a mineral exploration consultant for the Department of Energy and Mines. And although gold and base metal exploration is dwindling in the province, Mercer expects the sale of BP Canada’s mineral properties will spark some informal discussions. BP holds rights to more than 530,000 hectares surrounding the former-producing Buchans base metals mine.
“Despite the downturn, there are still a number of major companies active in the province,” he said.
To reflect the growing importance of petroleum resources in the province, the meeting will include talks on the Hibernia project and other aspects of the petroleum business.
