CIM meeting to feature Teck’s Antamina copper project

Michael Lipkewich, senior vice-president of mining for Teck, will discuss development of the Peruvian copper-zinc project known as Antamina on May 27 at a luncheon sponsored by the Vancouver branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The venue is the Stanley Park Pavilion.

Situated in the Andes Mountains, 380 km north of Lima, Antamina is one of the largest undeveloped copper-zinc deposits in the world, with a minable open-pit reserve of 494 million tonnes grading 1.3% copper, 1% zinc and 0.03% molybdenum, plus 12 grams silver per tonne. The life-of-mine stripping ratio is estimated at 2.4-to-1.

Development will include: 125 km of access road; 120 million tonnes of pre-stripping; a 70,000-tonne-per-day concentrator; a 232-metre-high rock-fill tailings dam; 300 km of concentrate pipeline; a port and concentrate de-watering facility; 58 km of power line; and a town-site with schools and medical facilities. Capital costs are estimated at US$2.26 billion.

Reservations are required by May 25. For more information, contact Alistair Kent at (604) 664-3109. Fax: (604) 66-4275. The e-mai address is: akent@hasimons.com
