CIM meeting to discuss exploration methods

The methods and limitations of mineral exploration will be the focus of a symposium to be hosted by the Mineral Economics Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum on Sept. 29 at Toronto’s Sheraton Hotel.

Entitled “Taking the Dream to Reality,” the meeting will provide an overview of the procedures used in the establishment of ore reserves.

The keynote address will be delivered by Graham Farquharson, president of Strathcona Minerals.

Topics scheduled for discussion include:

* Exploration and data collection — including: fundamentals of data collection, presented by Ben Ainsworth of Ainsworth-Jenkins Holdings; sampling techniques and procedures, presented by Michael Johnson, chief geologist of Greenstone Resources; assaying methods and results, presented by Russ Calow, manager of analytical services for Lakefield Research; exploration techniques, presented by Craig Nelson, chief executive officer of Metallica Resources; and geological modelling, presented by Neil Westoll, senior vice-president of exploration for TVI Pacific, and Neil Gow of Roscoe Postle Associates;

* Resource and reserve interpretation — including; ore resource and reserve determination, presented by Ken Grace of Micon International; and computer modelling, presented by Ralph Fitch, chief executive officer of General Minerals;

* Avoiding pitfalls in the due diligence process — presented by Steve Vaughn of the law firm Aird and Berlis; and

* Searching for capital in today’s marketplace — presented by James Gill, chief executive officer of Aur Resources.
