The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (CIM) will hold its annual meeting and trade show from April 28 to May 2 in Edmonton, Alta.
Attendance is expected to approach 3,000, with some 28 countries represented.
The meeting will highlight exploration and development by Canadian companies active in Labrador, the Northwest Territories and Indonesia.
Delegates will be free to attend field trips to prairie coal mines, research and test facilities, and mining sites in the Arctic.
Since coal mining contributes substantially to the region’s economy, a Coal Operators’ Conference will be held in Edmonton, in conjunction with the annual meeting.
Keynote speakers at the CIM meeting include David Swain, vice-president of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce; Rodney Fraser, president of the University of Alberta; and James Popowich, president of the Alberta Chamber of Resources and vice-president of operations for Fording Coal.
In addition, Natural Resources Minister Anne McLellan and an Edmonton member of Parliament will both deliver the welcoming address on April 29.
Suppliers will present a series of technical papers on the latest innovative processes, machinery and services currently under development.
The trade show portion of the meeting, which will feature 123 exhibits from both Canada and the U.S., will display and demonstrate the latest lines of mining equipment.
