Mining operations have ceased at the Choquelimpie gold mine in northern Chile, owned 35% by Northgate Exploration (TSE), but more gold may yet be recovered.
Northgate and its joint-venture partners undertook studies last year on treating spent-ore stockpiles; it is believed in situ rewashing has the potential to recover economically 35,000 oz. gold during a 2-year period. The mine, which produced 62,000 oz. gold and 440,000 oz. silver in 1992, ceased operating during the fourth quarter of last year. The low-grade operation averaged gold recoveries of 78.7% for the year.
