Chinese promoting 1990 world Mining Congress

14th World Mining Congress and Exhibition scheduled for May 14-18, 1990, in Beijing, China. The delegation, led by Hong Ge, chairman of the Chinese Organizing Committee for the congress, met with Canadian government and mining industry officials in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

About 3,000 delegates from 80 countries, including 1,500 from outside China, are expected to attend the 1990 congress. The gathering takes place every two-to-four years. It was last hosted by Sweden in 1987.

At a Toronto press conference, Hong said the congresses allow mining industry representatives to exchange technical expertise and research information. The trade exhibitions permit manufacturers to demonstrate the latest in mining equipment.

A technical organization, the World Mining Congress is composed of 39 country-members, including Canada. Chairman of the Canadian committee of the World Mining Congress is Arnold Pasieka of Hatch Associates.

Mining in China encompasses a wide variety of minerals, including coal, iron ore, non-ferrous metals, gold and uranium. The Chinese are interested in learning about new mining techniques and purchasing state-of-the-art equipment, and Hong said the 1990 convention will present an opportunity for the exchange of such information.

Special mine tours will be offered to delegates to the 1990 convention, where information will be disseminated in six languages (English, French, Russian, German, Spanish and Chinese).

Pasieka said Hong, who also serves as vice-chairman of the Non- Ferrous Metals Society of China, is one of the founders of his country’s modern metals industry. For the past 40 years, Hong has headed mine development, research and production of metal mines for his country’s Ministry of Metallurgy and more recently for the Chinese National Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Corp.

Future host nations of the congress include Spain in 1992 and Bulgaria in 1994. The U.S. is in the running to host the 1996 congress.
