China plans new copper smelter

A new 100,000-tonne-per-year copper smelter, to cost US$150-200 million, is being planned for China by CNNC Shanghai Smelter, the Cable and Wire Group of Shanghai, and Philipp and Lion, the publication Metal Bulletin reported. The first phase would see production of 50,000 tonnes of copper anodes per year by 1995. The second phase would double the capacity of copper anodes and allow for the production of copper cathodes. Sulphuric acid and precious metals would also be recovered.
