Ten charges brought against Hemlo Gold Mines (TSE) under the Federal Fisheries Act, the Ontario Water Resources Act and the Environmental Protection Act, all related to the Golden Giant mine in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, were either dismissed or withdrawn, the company says.
The charges stemmed from an incident in March, 1990, when small amounts of tailings and water spilled from a broken pipeline into Cedar Creek. The company was fined $7,000 for failing to report the incident in a timely manner. The incident occurred at about 4:45 a.m. and the provincial ministry of the environment was notified at about 8 a.m. that same morning, the company says.
Hemlo Gold says measures have been implemented at the mine to upgrade the tailings pipeline and to improve reporting procedures.
