A former Noranda researcher and current head of the department of mining engineering at Queen’s University has been appointed chair of the Lassonde Geological and Mining Engineering Program at the University of Toronto.
William Bawden, who received a doctorate in civil engineering from the U of T, brings more than 20 years of experience to the post, including time spent with Calgary-based Geotechnical Resources and the Geomechanics Research and Services Group at the Noranda Technology Centre in Point Clair, Que.
His industrial experience includes hydrogeological consulting, oil field service engineering and ice island research and construction. He also served as chairman of the Rock Mechanics and Strata Control Group of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum from 1991 to 1992.
Bawden has also been appointed chair of the department of geological and mining engineering at the U of T’s faculty of applied science and engineering. As chair of both that department and the Lassonde program, Bawden will further develop links between the industry and the school, as well as conduct research. Both posts take effect in September.
In past years, Bawden has carried out studies into the application of rock mechanics principles to underground mines and underground support systems, such as cable bolt design.
The Lassonde program is the result of a $5-Million donation to the university from Pierre Lassonde, president of Euro-Nevada Mining and Franco-Nevada Mining, to establish chairs, student scholarships and bursaries.
