Carpathian hits gold in Romania

Vancouver Two separate gold projects in northern Romania have returned encouraging assay results for Carpathian Gold (CPN-V). The Toronto-based company is exploring several exploration licenses in the historic mining region, including the 75%-held Baiut project, and the wholly owned Jereapan license, 6 km northwest of Baiut.

One of two holes drilled at Baiut hit 18.35 metres (12 metres true width) grading 6.07 grams gold per tonne, including 4 metres (2.6 metres true width) of 23.37 grams gold. The other returned two intersections: 8.65 metres (4.3 metres true width) of 5.5 grams gold and 5.6 metres (2.8 metres true width) of 7.19 grams, from a vertical depth of about 30-40 metres below surface.

Drilling at Baiut was aimed at determining the width and grade of a sub-vertical vein structure and associated stockwork zone that had never before been drill-tested. Romanian state agencies had previously defined an inferred resource of 341,000 tonnes of 4.75 grams gold per tonne based on sampling from underground levels. The average width of the exposed stockwork mineralization in the cross-cuts was 6.1 metres. The deposit remains open along strike, and at depth and width.

Carpathian says its ‘first-pass’ drill program at Baiut indicates that the mineralization is continuous over the intersected intervals, with true widths in the order of 12 metres, which includes vein zones of higher-grade mineralization. President Dino Titaro adds that the results show the project has “potential to be significantly expanded in size, and is a possible, high-grade, open-pit target.”

Metallurgical testing on two samples collected from underground crosscuts returned 95.3% and 93% gold recoveries using bio-oxidation followed by conventional cyanide leaching of sulphide concentrates.

One hole drilled at Jereapan returned 1 metre of 112 grams gold at a vertical depth of about 30 metres below surface. The hole was drilled to test the near-surface expression of a vein within an untested vein swarm with known historical production. Historical records show the vein has a strike length of 350 metres and persists to a vertical depth of 250 metres where limited historic mining took place. The company believes the project has potential to host a number of small deposits.

Follow-up drill programs were recommended for both projects. The company is also drilling its wholly owned Oravita license in southern Romania. Results are expected shortly.
