A ratification vote is set for early February on a contract between Operating Engineers Union Local 3 and Denver-based Newmont Mining.
The balloting will be held at the Elko Convention Center in Nevada after the union holds a meeting for members and their families to discuss details of the proposed contract.
The tentative agreement came during a meeting with Newmont negotiators in mid-January.
The contract covers the roughly 1,000 hourly workers at Newmont’s Carlin trend operations, including those who do not belong to the union.
This will be the second time union members have voted on a proposed Newmont contract since the previous version expired, on Sept. 30, 2002. The workers rejected a proposal last year.
About 100 workers traveled almost 1,000 km in September 2003 to picket outside the annual Gold Forum in Denver, which was attended by many Newmont shareholders.
A union spokesman said that if the union members accept the current proposal, they would receive “an excellent package” of benefits and pay increases, and Newmont would gain the flexibility and cost control it was seeking.
