Research Chairs

Laurentian university is located in Sudbury, at the heart of Ontario’s hard-rock mining industry. Laurentian is undertaking a major initiative to build on and strengthen its research and development contributions to the mining industry. Part of the initiative involved the creation of the Mining Innovation. Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCo). The focus of this not-for-profit corporation is the development and translation of research knowledge into practical technology that supports sustainable mining practices and economic diversification. In pursuit of these goals Laurentian is now seeking applications for two newly created positions funded by the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund.

THE POSITIONS: The Chair holders are: forward-looking entrepreneurial researchers, who create opportunities and have the ability to develop relationships with public and private sector partners. Qualified candidates will have an earned graduate degree (preferably a PhD) in applied science or an engineered field relevant to the research focus of the position, an outstanding knowledge of modem technology, a demonstrated track record in attracting funded R&D projects and experience working on projects with significant industry participation. International recognition in a relevant research area will provide the basis from which to build a multi-disciplinary team from engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, earth and computer science. The positions will be a tenure track or long-term contract positions with much reduced teaching responsibilities, reporting to the directorship of MIRARCo.

Chair in Monitoring Technology

Potential and preferred areas of R&D focus are:

  • Environmental monitoring – e.g., environmental impact assessment
  • Mines operations monitoring – e.g., equipment performance, maintenance, operations optimization
  • Geological monitoring – e.g., geosensing for grade detection & intelligent drilling
  • Data collection and interpretation; signal & image analysis; GIS

Chair in Mining Technology

Potential and preferred areas of R&D focus are:

  • Environmental modelling and evaluation of mining technologies or systems
  • Software development for mine planning and operations simulation
  • Operations monitoring and control systems
  • Economics and safety aspects of applied mining technologies
