Resource Geologist
Department of Sustainable Development, Arviat, Nunavut
Reporting to the Director, Minerals, Oil and Gas, you will be a part of a team that provides education, funding and field support for prospectors as well as facilitating information flow between communities, industry, the division and the department. You will also have knowledge of the geology and mineral industry of Nunavut, pertinent mining legislation and the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement.
You will have a Bachelor of Science in geology or geological engineering and be registered or have the ability to become registered in an association of professional geoscientist. You should have at five years of relevant work experience in geological mapping, core logging, prospecting, geophysics and geochemistry, including a good working knowledge of mineral deposits and their environments. You should also have experience in community relations in a cross-cultural setting, public presentations and administration including supervising staff and contact personnel, financial management and information reporting procedures.
Salary starts at $65,644 plus a northern allowance of $8,872 per annum.

Project Manager – New Underground Mine Development
Site preparation has begun on this $200-million mine, which will be accessed by a new 1500 metre shaft. The Project Manager, as head of the Owner’s team, will initially oversee the installation of the permanent hoist house and head frame in preparation for mobilization of the shaft sinking contractor and, subsequently, mine development. Duration of project is up to 52 months.
Ideal candidates will be graduate engineers, preferably mining. They will have had major project management experience involving shaft sinking, hoist and head frame installation, and underground mine development.
Zinc Plant Project Manager
With the feasibility study completed, a Project Manager is required to head up the Owner’s team of this $100-million project. The project includes construction of a new electrolytic cell house and a 90 MVA substation.
Ideal candidates will be graduate engineers, preferably metallurgical. They will have managed the construction of process plants, particularly pressure leach and electrolytic cell houses.

FACULTY POSITION IN MINING ENGINEERING
POSITION:
The Department of Mining and Metallurgy at Universit Laval is inviting applications for a tenure-track position in mining engineering, with expected starting date, January 1st, 2000. The selected candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise graduate students, and carry out an active research program in his/her areas of specialization.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates should have a primary interest in computer applications and design in open-pit mining. Pertinent knowledge in the field of drilling and blasting techniques is an important asset. Academic as well as industrial experience, and the ability and willingness to carry out research in collaboration with the mining industry will be considered in the selection. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in mining engineering, be eligible for membership in the Quebec Order of Engineers, and be fluent in French.
