Denver-based Canyon Resources has been recognized for its environmental work at the Briggs gold mine in southeastern California.
In a letter addressed to the company, the state director of the bureau of Land Management describes the mine as “exemplary of what responsible mining entails.”
The company has cleaned up abandoned mine sites in the area and developed initiatives to help ensure healthy populations of bats, a species native to the valley. The company also eradicated sponge-like tamarisk plants from the area, contributing to enhanced water supplies.
The Briggs mine produced 96,141 oz. gold in 2001.
