Canyon Resources recognized for mine site reclamation work

The U.S. government has awarded Canyon Resources the Health and Land award for its reclamation efforts at the Kendall open-pit gold mine site in central Montana.

The work resulted in the reintroduction of peregrine falcons to the mine site.

Canyon began a program to reintroduce the birds to the region in 1996 after ores at the mine were exhausted. The idea was to have the birds inhabit the cliff faces formed by the pit walls.

Canyon plans to continue the program for an additional three years, until such time as the mature birds from the 1996 release could return to raise their young.
