Canadian Mining Hall of Fame – Inductee JOHN E. HAMMELL, 1876-1958

It was John E. Hammell’s ambition to “crack open the north,” and he did that through his pioneering use of aircraft. Hammell’s perseverance led to the eventual development of the Flin Flon operations of Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting and in 1925 he initiated an airlift of supplies necessary to develop the Howey gold mine at Red Lake marking the introduction of aviation to the business of mineral exploration and development.
