Canadian apartheid?

Regarding your editorial “Flin Flon shouldn’t suffer for Apartheid.” (N.M., Oct 31/88):

Apartheid is not an English but Dutch word, meaning separation. According to The Northern Miner, Canadians abhor separation. My question to The Northern Miner is a simple one. Could you and/or will you explain to your readers why it is that, if Canadians abhor Apartheid in South Africa, they seem to find nothing wrong with having their own native peoples living in separation on reserves, separate from white society, in other words, Apartheid. J. von Pickartz Ottawa, Ont.
