Canada to help fund democratic initiatives in African nations

Canada will contribute $2.2 million to a fund established to support democratic development in Africa.

The Democratic Development Fund, which is designed to provide election support, will be disbursed in an effort to help the transformation from military to civilian rule.

The bulk of the funding will be used in Nigeria, which sparked worldwide outrage last year following its execution of Nigerian writer Ken Saro Wiwa.

The remainder of the fund will be used in Gambia and Sierra Leone.
