I am surprised by the number of letters you are publishing concerning the U.S. attack on Iraq. I am especially surprised by the simplistic take on Canada’s decision to remain neutral, as lamentably described by Messieurs Flinker and Laporte (T.N.M., April 14-20/03).
They both seem to subscribe to some outmoded code of behaviour that says you should blindly follow your friends no matter the folly of their actions. There are no absolute right or wrong answers to this mess. The consequences of a war are so grave that every opportunity to avoid it should have been exhausted; the failure to do so will be judged harshly by history. Though it was poorly handled, Canada made the right decision.
