Bus accident kills Buenaventura workers

A bus accident on the road from the Uchucchacua silver mine to the nearby town of Oyon, Peru, took the lives of 28 employees of Minas Buenaventura (BVN-N) and injured 17 others.

The bus, chartered by Buenaventura for workers commuting from Oyon, slid off a hillside road and fell about 200 metres. Uchucchacua, in the northeastern part of Lima department, is in the mid-Andes at nearly 4,000 metres elevation.

Local police are investigating the accident and Buenaventura is providing some relief to the families of the employees.

Uchucchacua is a complex of a mill and three underground silver-lead-zinc mines, Socorro, Carmen and Huantajalla. It produced about 2.2 million oz. silver and 1,156 tonnes zinc in the first quarter of the year.
