Bullmoose slashes workforce

Vancouver — The Bullmoose coal mine in northeastern British Columbia is reducing its workforce as the deposit nears depletion.

Forty-three employees were recently laid off, reducing the total workforce to 222.

The deposit will be mined out by the spring of next year and then permanently closed.

The mine has operated continuously since production began in 1983. It has shipped more than 32 million tonnes of metallurgical coal to overseas steel producers.

The mine is owned by Teck Cominco, with a 61% interest, BHP Billiton, with 29%.

Japan-based Nissho-Iwai owns the remaining 10%.
