Britannia rules the mine rescue awards

A mine rescue team from the New Britannia mine in Snow Lake, Man., has won first place at a provincial competition.

The team beat out competitors from Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting’s Flin Flon, Leaf Rapids and Snow Lake operations, as well as teams from Inco’s Thompson, Tanco’s Lac du Bonnet and Underground Research Laboratory’s Pinawa projects.

The members of the winning team include: captain Peter Fris; vice-captain Glen Otto; trainer Norman Ladoucer; director of operations Thomas Hilliard; and others.

The competition was a mock rescue in a simulated mine, and all competitors would have successfully rescued miners in the event of a real emergency.

The New Britannia mine is a 50-50 joint venture between TVX Gold and High River Gold Mines, with the former as operator.
