Reclamation programs from mines across British Columbia were recognized recently in Kamloops, B.C., at the 15th annual Mine Reclamation Symposium. Six companies received awards, with Brenda Mines, a recently closed copper-molybdenum operation in the Okanagan, winning the top award. Brenda won for its program of recontouring and revegetating waste rock dumps and the tailings (dam and beach area) adjacent to a recently completed connector highway. More than 230 hectares of land have been reclaimed. Five others received citations: Total Energold, metal mining; Westar Mining, coal-mining; Preido Mines, placer mine; Polestar Exploration, exploration; and Butler Bros., sand and gravel. Under B.C. legislation, all mining operations, before starting work, must have plans accepted by an inter-agency committee to reclaim land disturbed by mining activities. The 1991 symposium took place in conjunction with the Canadian Land Reclamation Association annual meeting.
