Breakwater reopens El Toqui

Stronger zinc prices and an improved mill performance have prompted Toronto-based Breakwater Resources (BWR-T) to resume mining at its El Toqui zinc mine in central Chile.

The company suspended mining earlier this year, partly because of low metal prices. During the shutdown, the company milled a 103,000-tonne stockpile of broken development ore. This work showed that recoveries and concentrate grades were better than planned, which influenced the decision to reopen.

This year, El Toqui is expected to produce about 70 million lbs. of zinc-in-concentrate, which would be significantly more than the 36 million lbs. produced during the eight months of operation in 1998.

Breakwater also operates the Nanisivik mine in Canada’s Arctic, the Bougrine mine in Tunisia and the El Mochito mine in Honduras.
